Coda was a series of performances of electronic music and live-coding. Several artist / programmers performed improvised sets creating visuals which respond to the music. The code is displayed on one screen and audio-reactive visuals on another.
The arrangement created a collaborative feedback loop. Musicians responded to the visuals with sound. Artists responded to the music with code.
The Source Code Aesthetic #
For my set, I wanted my live visuals to incorporate images of the source code I was typing. To that end, I prepared a shell script which pulled recent screenshots into my Processing app.
During the actual set, I took screenshots of my code editor and they were automatically incorporated into the music visualizations.
It became a new medium to play with: in addition to writing code, I could take screenshots of different sizes. Screenshots of large regions resulted in calmer vibes while small screenshots tended towards chaos.
