Getting lost in the reeds here. The reaction diffusion stuff looks like it’ll work but I should make sure I’m oriented toward the goal of generating insect wings.

Here’s a picture with a nice variety of insect wings. It’s from “Computational analysis of size, shape, and structure of insect wings.” Mary Salcedo, Jordan Hoffmann, Seth Donoughe, L. Mahadevan.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/336657048_Computational_analysis_of_size_shape_and_structure_of_insect_wings/citation/download?_tp=eyJjb250ZXh0Ijp7ImZpcnN0UGFnZSI6Il9kaXJlY3QiLCJwYWdlIjoiX2RpcmVjdCJ9fQ

Some of those names sound familiar. Hoffmann and Donoughe worked on the paper I cited three days ago. Small world.

For the Diptera I don’t even know where to start. So many weird shapes in there and it’s hard to nail down a pattern to it all.

Orthoptera and Phasmatodea are more straight forward. Straight or curved lines that extend directly from the joint to the outer edge, then filled with cross veins. Orthoptera has a nice swirl going on.

Odonata is very nostalgic and dragonflies are probably what motivated all this in the first place. Plecoptera have a lot of similarities, too. Odonata wings are more complicated than I thought they’d be. There are pretty distinct structures near the joint as well as on the leading edge of the wing.

Thankfully I’m not here to generate accurate wings, just enough to capture some of their beauty in their appearance and in the algorithm that created them.
