Did some reading and maintaining your own mail server is a huge pain and server administration is not even my cup of tea in the first place. Apparently spam makes everything complicated and painful. So I’m not going to setup my own mail server.
A good-looking alternative is to move my email domain to NameCheap or BlueHost or somewhere that provides email hosting services. Then I can tie my gmail account into that. It still serves to get rid of the fixed from address and I don’t have to maintain a Lambda and AWS SES. It’ll cost $2-3 a month, reckon. Better than $10 a month for Google Workspace. And that would require I transfer to Google anyway so one way or another it’s got to leave AWS.
